Headphone posting

Headphone posting is a trend originating from /soy/. A typical Headphonepost features a body related to the smell of headphones, or headphones in general with a Neutralplier image attached.
History
[edit | edit source]Early History
[edit | edit source]The first relevant instance of headphone posting occurred on October 13, 2026, stating "smell your headphones real quick and tell me what it smells like".[1] Dozens of threads all pertaining to headphones, presumably by the same poster, would appear later that month on October 30, causing them to be deleted[2] and the poster to be banned for avatarfagging. The subject of these threads varied, but commonly mentioned mildew, the material of the headphone, such as if it was synthetic or not, or asking why the headphones smell. The users of the board would begin to notice this unusual activity, and the first threads mocking the poster and bringing attention to it, such as a thread with the subject "What genre of mental illness is this?", and a link to an Archived.st search query displaying the phenomenon.[3] Many such threads would follow soon after, with some even speculating that it was a bizarre fetish.
Explosion in Popularity
[edit | edit source]Users would continue to make threads mocking or imitating the original Headphoneposter throughout October 30, with a notable uptick occurring during the later hours of October 31st, UTC time. Threads would begin to diverge from the original format, while still remaining recognizable by utilizing the link to headphones. People would also begin accusing the meme of being forced by a specific Discord group, but these claims remain unsubstantiated.
Possible Explanations
[edit | edit source]Paraphilia
[edit | edit source]A likely explanation to the origin of this strange phenomenon is that the original poster was expressing their fetish, or more specifically a paraphilia such as objectophilia or olfactophilia. This is is supported by the fact that the initial headphone threads often had sexual or romantic undertones.[4]
Shitposting
[edit | edit source]Another likely explanation is that the original poster never had a paraphilic interest in the smell of headphones, but rather made the threads in attempt to force it as a meme.
