A suppressor is a cylindrical firearm attachment, typically measuring 5 to 9 inches (12,7 and 22,86 cm respectively) in length, installed directly onto the muzzle of a gun barrel to attenuate the noise and muzzleflash resultant of its discharge.

History

Early 1900s

The first commercially successful suppressor was invented in 1902 by Hiram Percy Maxim. This inventiveness practically ran in his blood; his father invented the Maxim machine gun and his uncle invented smokeless powder. Maxim developed the device to solve one very much domestic conundrum: conventional firearms were noisy and using them drew the risk of complaints and angry neighbours.

Patented in 1909, he would sell his device to sportsmen through hardware stores and sporting goods catalogs, usually for just a few dollars.

Great Depression

During the Great Depression, lawmakers took a liking to the idea that cheap and accessible suppressors would allow poaching and slip in the hands of gangsters. In light of this, they preemptively passed the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934, requiring registration with the government and placing suppressors under a $200 transfer tax. That's $4,984.36 today.

World Wars and beyond

While sales flatlined due to that kikeish imposition, military forces recognized the utility of suppressors. In World War II, intelligence agencies and special operations units distributed suppressed weapons for assassinations, sentry removal, and resistance fighting. In Vietnam, American tunnel rats used suppressors to engage enemies and underground complexes.

Today

For over eight decades, suppressors remained niche, though they saw a resurgence in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, when shooters, hunters, and industry manufacturers began advocating for them as tools for hunting, target shooting, protecting hearing, and reducing noise pollution. Today, dozens of states in the U.S. allow civie ownership of suppressors.

Fun fact: all eight states in which suppressors are banned are blue-leaning: California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.
