categorization discussion

[edit source]

itt we talk about cats

@Soyfield@Twift since you two are interested in categorization, I'd like to hear your thoughts, recommendations, ideas, or anything you'd like to say regarding the current effort, you can use this talk page to essentially coordinate the effort Rickert ⚔ 02:18, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

the basic layout is this is top with 3 key subcats, articles (for content) administration (for maintenance, reports, and other technical snca) and navigation (helping people navigate between pages/topics). cross-categorization (i.e. something in admin also in articles) should be very rare (navigation can be more intermingled doe) and overall it should follow a reasonable structure, basically funneling upwards toward contents. I had the idea to categorize redirects (categories like "alternative spelling redirects," "alternative term redirects," "redirects to subheadings," "joke redirects," etc.) but there are a lot of redirects and I don't know if it can be automated. Redirects categories would fall under the admin. umbrella (maintenance), a few like subheadings could be automated but there's too much context involved, the bot would be helpful only in some cases. R-series (for redirect) templates should handle the categorization instead of adding links directly, I'll think about it. Rickert ⚔ 03:32, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Basically, all redirects get a shell and the appropriate R-serie template is used depending on what it is, obviously we want to keep it as simple as possible. The catch is there is 8,189 redirects to work on in total, and I'd assume ~1000/2000 are important enough. Rickert ⚔ 03:40, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
The main problem I am concerned with other than what's happening is the little attention given to backlogged categories Twift (talk) 06:11, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

looking great

[edit source]

looks a lot like wikipedia's category:contents Cobblestone (talk) 13:00, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

that's what I based it on(still a work in progress), simplified since overcategorizing defeats the purpose and we don't need that many anyway. What do you think about the discussion re/ redirect categorization above? Rickert ⚔ 13:35, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
it's probably too much because even jannies won't bother with properly categorizing redirects using the shell template like WP Cobblestone (talk) 17:50, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree, if @Soyfield wants to categorize a group of them that he thinks is important/critical enough we could do it for those select few but overall they should stay uncategorized, the task is too tedious & big and overall impossible to automate anyway. Rickert ⚔ 00:53, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
What categories are you thinking for redirects? One I had in mind that doesn't seem massively tedious is cross-namespace redirects. I'm not sure how many of those there are doe. Soyfield (Talk Page • Contributions • Email) 03:53, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
To: Anchors/sections, with history, merge redirects, and move redirects come to mind but like Cobble said it is quite the tedious task. Have you seen my comment at Category talk: United States? Rickert ⚔ 04:08, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
the bot could handle these since they are structural and need no interpretation as well Rickert ⚔ 04:10, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
