Imageboards are a species of website invented by some basement dwelling jap in the 90's. The premise is that all posts on an imageboard are anonymous and eventually fall off the last page resulting in its deletion. There are no accounts nor any need to use a username in order to post (but you can still namefag).

Imageboard Engines[edit | edit source]

Comprehensive list: https://overscript.net

Futaba and derivatives[edit | edit source]

The open source[1] imageboard script of the Futaba Channel, based on the 1999 GazouBBS. Would later be forked as Futallaby, which would become the base of 4chan's Yotsuba engine and TinyIB. Futaba is Japanese for "two leaves."

Yotsuba engine[edit | edit source]

(((Closed source))) Open source imageboard engine used by 4chan, meaning "four leaves" in Japanese, its name of course deriving from Futaba. Kinda shit due to lack of features that are more common in other engines, i.e. being able to post more than one image and being able to post images from your clipboard, and also because the code has not been upgraded since 2016 o algo. However it becomes pretty gemmy if you install 4chan-XT and optionally Onee-Chan. A fork by a soyteen is here if you want it. Now patched and upgraded to work with PHP 8. Both Yotsuba and OpenYotsuba are really annoying to get working doe.

TinyIB[edit | edit source]

A small open-source imageboard. A very basic script, but easy to set up.

Vichan[edit | edit source]

One of the most popular imageboard engines as of 2022, open-source and used by soyjak.party along with many others. Good functionality and utility, good layout for posting so typing doesn't feel so cramped, and fewer bugs. Works best without captcha. On March 24, 2023, the ownership of Vichan's GitHub repository was transferred to a GitHub organization with 3 members, one of whom was Kuz. Him, Angeleno and a random /g/tard called BasedGentoo are now the maintainers of the project.[2]

Infinity Next[edit | edit source]

Outdated trash. Known for glitches, lag, and captchas breaking mid-post (this happens often). Written by Null and originally intended for 8chan but is now open-source.

Lynxchan[edit | edit source]

A modern imageboard engine, quite easy automatic install, used on KOHLCHAN and few other imageboards. Can be extensible but lacks a search feature and requires JavaScript to be enabled to be able to post.

jschan[edit | edit source]

An engine with a similar look and feel to Lynxchan. Unlike Lynxchan, does not require separate frontend installation. Apparently what Quote reccomends [apparently xe said it on the discord irc]. Notable in the Soysphere for being used on the Jarty.

Nanochan[edit | edit source]

A decent privacy focused engine, Javascript isn't required to post. Popular with a few darknet altchans. Had some imageboard virgin drama associated with it but who the fuck cares. Use picochan or lambdaplusjs (lambdaplusjs is lolipedo dnb of a site and their captcha is pure aids but it's the only currently updated no js engine) alternatively. Open-source of course.

Kokonotsuba[edit | edit source]

Open source imageboard software developed by KolymaNET and used on their imageboards. It supports rare features like TripMail, built-in emoticons, a dating feature, gemvoting, and some others.[3]. It's based on some oldfag chink software which itself was based from an oldfag gook software (it was made for Heyuri so xhey made it from oldfag shit). It was released to the public in 2023, had been proprietary prior to this. Named in the spirit of KolymaNET's site 9chan (9channel was likely just a made up imageboard to make carter seem like an oldfag thoughbeit), as ここの (kokono) is the less-common but native Japanese word for 9.

SootEngine 2.0[edit | edit source]

Rumored hidden work-in-progress imageboard software which is built specifically to maximize datamining potential. Allegedly requires a credit card, SSN, passport, biometric face ID, fingerprint, dna swab, mind-reader chip, and signature reader to post. Soot apparently led the development of this until Quote took over the project as xe datamines better[4]. Now officially rebranded as Quotechan, it got rebranded again to nusoi.
