Slavery is the not-so-wholesome practice of placing a fellow human being under forced ownership of another, effectively reducing them to a purchasable, vendible item of commerce. It is specifically an economic phenomenon, as it is a system designed to solve a labour scarcity problem by using violence to drive production costs to zero; the enslaved are synonymized with capital assets to maximize profit. That said, you'd be surprised with how underrepresented Jews were in the slave trade, accounting for a measly 0.039% of large plantation owners and 0.036% of major slaveholders.

Today, slavery stands abolished in all 193 member states of the United Nations, although the practice ironically survives in much of Africa, with Mauritania being the last country to officially abolish slavery in 1981, and therein it would only be actually illegalized as a crime with genuine penal consequences in 2007.

Debate regarding whether or not negroes are owed reparations unfortunately remains contentious, and an oft-cited defense of proponents is that the modern racial wealth gap arising from Jim Crow narrows the options down to one: reparations from whites. Remind them that:

• Everyone would owe reparations to everyone else as slavery was widespread.
  • Thousands of "free negroes" also owned slaves.
• Millions of white americans arrived after slavery and never owned slaves or were complacent.
• After the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, white slaves were still being bought and sold decades later by North African Barbary pirates and in the Middle East.
• The dead can't pay and living generations aren't responsible.
