Pixel art is a overused example of indieslop. Indie devs excuse using pixel art as "Just an art style" and its "part of the aesthetic". In reality its because making pixel art is alot easier than being a real artist 9999% of the time. whenever someone counters with that argument just say that "any other art style would look better than pixel art.".

Having extremely sharp edges is just ugly.

Unless you have extreme creative ability and effort, you art will not be unique if you use pixel art. 99% of normalGOD consumers who look at pixel art will just say "oh hey that's from those old arcade games". No one will ever remember your artstyle because you can probably count on your fingers the amount of video game franchises that have a unique art style with pixel art. Even then, the effort needed to stand out is so high, you would be better off using an entirely different art style.

Pixel art is almost never, ever original.

When it comes to the ease of expressing creative freedom and being remembered, pixel art is one of the worst art styles you can use.

One of the main reasons for using pixel art was because it was nostalgic. However now with every indie game being made in pixel art its no longer the case. the Nostalgia augment does not hold anymore.

The real reason is that Indie devs are dopamine junkies who can only develop games by pumping lots of rushed games out, each in a month's or even week's time, for game jams. The only way to feasibly work in this timescale while not having mastered any medium of analog or digital art is by committing to using pixelshit. Then they make propaganda in their little gamedev circles about how pixel art is "homegrown" and "empowering" and "raw" and feed it to minors who feel obligated to ~be a good person~ like all dumb little kids do but instead of it being just fun kid shit they're getting used by Indie devs who are invariably pedophiles, except for the people who made the indie games I like because those are good and actually they aren't indie they're just low-budget.

Its worth noting that although some games can have a ugly pixel art style, the game can still be redeemed if it has good game-play like Hotline Miami
