r/The_Donald

Really well meme'd my friend!

r/The_Donald was a subreddit created as a hub for Donald Trump's campaign for the 2016 Presidential Election, lasting all the way until its eventual shutdown on 2020 after much leaking from the rest of Reddit and its admins.
History
[edit | edit source]The subreddit was created on 2015 to discuss news and offer support and discuss news to Trump's presidential run. Compared to the rest of Reddit which is a circlejerk incredibly hostile to Trump and any opinion slightly right of center, r/The_Donald was much more chuddy, even in comparison even to milquetoast conservative subreddits, unsurprisingly it had a heavy 4chan presence and was considered to some as the "central hub for /pol/ on Reddit". For years, redditors had been accusing r/the_donald of containing a lot of heckin racism and homophobia due to these /pol/ immigrants, who made some very edgy posts relating to controversial topics like wikileaks, the Unite the Right rally on Charlottesville and the Christchurch Shooting, which of course attracted of reddit's jannies who got their pansies into a twist. This included even the CEO of Reddit himself, Spez who went as far as to abuse his admin powers to edit posts criticizing him to instead attack r/the_donald jannies.[1] The subreddit itself also had a problem with infighting and some of the jannies changing and quitting, with some purged jannies even creating a splinter called r/Mister_Trump for people who thought the new jannies were being too politcally correct.[2]
Shutdown
[edit | edit source]In 2019, r/The_Donald was quarantined due to "calls for violence", which means that nobody new was able to join the subreddit or view its content.[3] This was part of a long effort from the reddit staff to bury the community, as just years earlier they had blacklisted it from appearing on the fornt page of Reddit. After the quarantine, most users tried migrating to the splinter r/Mr_Trump, but it got banned for "subreddit ban evasion". In February 2020, they had put r/TheDonald in restricted mode, which meant most users couldn't even make new posts on it, and finally on June of the same year, they had completely shut it down.
Cultural Impact
[edit | edit source]Like many other subreddits who got censored or banned like rDrama and WatchPeopleDie, r/The_Donald users created their own website under thedonald.win, america.win and eventually patriots.win. As many Pepes mourned the closure of the subreddit, the legacy of r/TheDonald became very influential under the culture of Frogposting, and in frogspeak, both Frogoogoos and nusois are occasionally referred to as "nu-the_donald Browsers".
