A gradingbox is a template that describes the current general opinion among soyteens about a page's topic. Gradingboxes replaced quality headers in 2026. Gradingboxes are placed in the "reception" section of an article as a summary. The gradingbox template can be found at {{Gradingbox}}.
Rules[edit | edit source]
Unlike quality headers, gradingboxes follow strict rules:
- This template MUST be in a "Reception" section near the bottom of the page (usually above See also or Gallery), which must also contain headings for each year or era showing how something came to be regarded by soyteens over time.
- In case of any edit wars, a poll MUST be made on /soy/, and the grading will be set to whatever the result of that poll is. To change the grading, another poll must be made, otherwise, changing the grading is to be considered vandalism.
- This template shouldn't be used where the grading being very bad is common sense, like putting "Brimstone" on the page for pedophilia, because it is redundant and also implies that soyteens could change their opinion on how they view pedophilia etc.
- Do not add increasingly extreme, complex, or vague gradings like singularity, vantawhite, equinox, and so on. Try to keep it simple. Head to the talk page to discuss adding another rating. If a new rating is added, an equal but opposite rating should also be added to ensure that there is an equal number of ratings on either side of iron.
- If added to perspective pages, it must obviously have the same grading as the main page because it represents overall soyteen consensus and not perspectives.
- Do not use this template outside of a properly written "Reception" section.

At first, the general opinion on pages' topics was conveyed via quality headers that were nearly identical to the page quality headers you see today. These were removed in January 2026, in an event known as the Gradingcaust. The Gradingcaust was done because quality headers encouraged groupthink and edit wars, and certain ratings were ambiguous. For example, there were ratings such as "gem that saved the party," "supernova that saves the entire soyverse," "coal that killed the party," and "singularity that dooms the entire soyverse." There were also ratings that were completely redundant such as "iron" and "vantagray iron from the lukewarm surface of mulattopurgatorium." The Gradingcaust was controversial and turned several editors against the admin at the time, Cobblestone.
On July 14, 2026, Cobblestone resigned and appointed Fenriris as her successor. Editors called upon him to undo the Gradingcaust. He declined, but Cobblestone came back and created gradingboxes as an ordinary editor.
Ratings[edit | edit source]
Unlike the former quality headers, gradingboxes have a small number of ratings that are clearly defined.
Gemerald[edit | edit source]

The "Gemerald" rating describes topics that are considered especially good by soyteens. These are topics that almost everyone loves.

The "Gem" rating describes topics that are considered good by soyteens. Most 'teens like the topic.

Ruby[edit | edit source]

The "Ruby" rating describes topics that have the potential to be good, but need a little more work.

- New 'jaks that are good but haven't cemented themselves in Soy culture
- Newly promoted admins who are well-liked
- Neutralraids with one or two big successes
Iron[edit | edit source]
Most soyteens currently regard [Topic] as:
The "Iron" rating describes topics that are neither good nor bad, or have some good elements and some bad ones. Most topics are iron by default

- 'jaks that nobody likes or dislikes
- Admins who have done some popular actions and some unpopular ones
- Mediocre media
- Most neutralraids
Dust[edit | edit source]
Most soyteens currently regard [Topic] as:
The "Dust" rating is the opposite of a ruby. Dust is content that is low-effort and soulless, but not very actively bad. Dust is mainly used for forgettable things that will likely die with time.

- Admins with very short tenures
- Poorly-made 'jaks that are never used
- Sites that died quickly
Coal[edit | edit source]

The "Coal" rating describes topics that most soyteens dislike. These topics have a lot of negative qualities, but aren't completely irredeemable.

Brimstone[edit | edit source]
Most soyteens currently regard [Topic] as:
The "Brimstone" rating describes topics that are irredeemably awful. The most vile sludge from the boiler room of Niggerhell. No sane person would ever like it.

- Disgraced admins
Advantages over quality headers[edit | edit source]
Objectivity[edit | edit source]
Rather than saying that a topic "is coal" or "is a gem," gradingboxes say that most soyteens currently regard the topic as the rating. This conveys that the rating is just the general opinion and not what the reader is meant to think.
Fewer ratings[edit | edit source]
As stated above, quality headers had far too many ratings, many of which were ambiguous and/or redundant. Gradingboxes are much more simplified. There are only seven ratings, three on each side of iron.
Edit war prevention[edit | edit source]
One of the rules of gradingboxes is that a poll must be held on /soy/ to change the rating. Edit warring was a massive problem with quality headers. Some pages have hundreds of revisions that did nothing but change the rating.

As a way to undo the Gradingcaust, gradingboxes were very well-received by wiki editors, but currently, there are some kinks to be ironed out, and most pages need to have reception sections written in order for this template to be useful. Most editors agree that gradingboxes have potential, but some feel that they will be abused. Some also say that editors will be too lazy to write reception sections, leading to gradingboxes not seeing much use.
