abbr tag[edit source]
Is this really necessary? No other page (HTML, JavaScript, Java, etc.) uses this. This isn't a "page that looks like the thing it's about" either. RetardedESLjeet (talk) 21:08, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- Time to add the abbr tag on other pages then. it's a useful tag; I do hope people aren't that technologically illiterate that they don't know that you can hover over a word with a dotted underline to get a tooltip North (talk) 21:10, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- Nigga wait before we finish this discussion before making changes. And it's not about people being smart or retarded that they can or cannot hover over the bolded name, it's just that there's literally no point. We don't do things just because we can, there has to be plausible reason to make such a change. @Fenriris what do you think, should we go through with this or not, it just seems pointless when the same information (full name) can be expressed much more simply side by side. - Since I’m a web developer, I’ll give my perspective from that angle. I don’t think the <abbr> tag is necessary here. Tooltips are generally best used to provide extra context for interactive elements (like buttons or icons) that need additional explanation (such as an icon button). For other cases, the full term can just be written out normally, so the tooltip doesn’t really add anything. I do know it can be used for genuinely unclear abbreviations, but in my experience I’ve almost never seen it used that way in practice. Fenriris 🐺 05:31, 14 November 2025 (UTC)
