Bot to Sync Infobox Soyjak template from SoyBooru automatically[edit source]

Since I am an SoyDev, I had an idea for a wiki bot that would automatically update the {{Infobox Soyjak}} template across pages using it. Ideally, the bot would run automatically on a weekly schedule. Specifically, the bot would:

  • Fetch all the {{Infobox Soyjak}} that have an {{boorusearch}} subtemplate
  • Retrieve the latest number of Soyjak booru posts for each entry
  • Update the relevant filed in the template on pages where the current number is outdated

If the booru provides an API, that would be preferred for data retrieval. Otherwise, I can implement responsible web scraping as a fallback (if the developer of MCChallenge can whitelist bots).

Before proceeding further, I wanted to check in and see if this sounds acceptable and whether there are any concerns, recommendations, or requirements I should be aware of. Thanks!

I just wanted to add that I think it would be a good idea for it to do other repetitive functions as well for example adding {{permabanned}} template automatically to an user once banned indefinitely. Let me know if anyone has any other ideas, etc. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 10:53, 5 June 2025 (EST)
hello. sorry for missing this, i was on hiatus then. we would love to have a bot this useful, but I think you should talk to Quote first via email since he runs this wiki. Cobblestone (talk) 17:32, 9 June 2025 (EST)

Of course Saar. And your welcome, I actually would of done Feature Gem through the static page, but I did not have permissions so I did it the other way Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 20:55, 1 July 2025 (EST)
static gem is autoconfirmed now. use it and use permanentlinks to archive. Cobblestone (talk) 22:43, 1 July 2025 (EST)

explanation[edit source]

i would explain why i changed how the aligning shit works but just look at the main page now and you'll understand it faster Cobblestone (talk) 11:29, 24 July 2025 (EST)

or just look at this this vs this Cobblestone (talk) 11:37, 24 July 2025 (EST)
Ah, my bad. I noticed when I created the template style, it was not centering correctly so I added an flex box with align align-items: center;. But somehow your solution is working better. In my experience with css, alignment is always an pain. More so with images. At least it is working now. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 11:43, 24 July 2025 (EST)
no problem. thanks for making the image box gooder. Cobblestone (talk) 11:46, 24 July 2025 (EST)
Sure! Your welcome. I do want to improve the northboxes by adding an an custom height and custom title optional parameters, in case anyone wants to use those templates. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 11:49, 24 July 2025 (EST)
feel free to do so, but i would consider making the user northboxes separate templates if modifying them like that impacts how they function on the main page Cobblestone (talk) 11:51, 24 July 2025 (EST)
albeit having 4 templates isnt ideal so if you're able to have everything in 1 package then that's also good. the real issue i think would be making their alignment on the page/float modifiable via a parameter. that could get annoying. Cobblestone (talk) 11:52, 24 July 2025 (EST)
Dont worry, I will leave in defaults. It will default based off of the main page. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 11:52, 24 July 2025 (EST)
i added the height parameter in but i accidentally removed it once you reverted the padding on the original northbox and i copypasted your modifications over to match. oops. also i'll go ahead and make the colors optional too Cobblestone (talk) 12:55, 24 July 2025 (EST)
Ah, thats fine. Yeah, I wanted to keep the way that you originally did it. The first changes was just to see if it works. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 13:06, 24 July 2025 (EST)
btw. parameters can be set to have default values without using parser if statements by doing {{{parameter|default value is this}}} Cobblestone (talk) 13:22, 24 July 2025 (EST)
Thanks, I actually did not know that about parameters. Very useful! Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 13:29, 24 July 2025 (EST)

Security risk[edit source]

It's a security risk to display an article directly on the main page because someone could go put 'p on whatever article is up to have it be displayed. When you want to feature something, copy all of its wikitext to Main Page/Featured Gem/Article and feature that. Cobblestone (talk) 05:58, 26 July 2025 (EST)

Nevermind. I just cascade protected the static featured gem. Cobblestone (talk) 06:03, 26 July 2025 (EST)
I can't edit static anymore when you did that. I think it is the cascade. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 13:01, 26 July 2025 (EST)
I forgot. Tell me if you can edit Template:Redtext. I'll respond differently depending on if Cobblestone (talk) 13:03, 26 July 2025 (EST)
Yes, I can edit that template. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 13:04, 26 July 2025 (EST)
Wait. I cant. It confused me because it said "edit source" like I had permission. It says: "This page has been protected from editing because it is transcluded in the following page, which is protected with the "cascading" option turned on" Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 13:07, 26 July 2025 (EST)
Can you edit the static gem now? Cobblestone (talk) 13:07, 26 July 2025 (EST)
Oh rip. Ok hold on. Cobblestone (talk) 13:08, 26 July 2025 (EST)
tysm, I can edit them now Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 13:16, 26 July 2025 (EST)
I removed the cascading protection so the featured gem is exposed. Don't worry, I have a solution though. Cobblestone (talk) 13:18, 26 July 2025 (EST)
Ok. From now on edit Main Page/Featured Gem/Article to change the northbox text. Just copy paste the article text in there. Cobblestone (talk) 13:50, 26 July 2025 (EST)
Ok, sounds good Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 13:51, 26 July 2025 (EST)

Current problem[edit source]

There's a problem with images in tabbers in infoboxes specifically, where if they are larger than 200px width they overflow and get a slider. Can you configure the bot to go through the 'ki and resize all images in tabbers to 200px? Cobblestone (talk) 06:13, 29 July 2025 (EST)

How often do you want it to check that, or do you want it to do it for that one time? Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 13:45, 29 July 2025 (EST)
I found an better solution with css:

object-fit: contain;
width: 100%;
height: auto;

Just put that on the infoboxes that use tabber, that way all images wont have to be manually resized. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 14:10, 29 July 2025 (EST)
That worked. Thanks. Cobblestone (talk) 14:36, 29 July 2025 (EST)

Go to a page's history and you'll be able to tick specific revisions to suppress now. Use this to hide bad links or content if they get posted while I'm not around. It's up to you whether to suppress the edit summary and user in addition to the revision text when you do this. "Suppress from admins too" makes it not show up in the recent changes log so you can do that too if you want. Cobblestone (talk) 16:18, 7 August 2025 (EST)

Got it! Thanks. I guess that means I am fully fledged glowie now. How neat! I will be careful to use this responsibly to remove the bad stuff, and not in fact for world domination. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 19:02, 7 August 2025 (EST)

You can reject edits if they're too ESL now (or approve and fix if you're feeling charitable). This issue has been prevalent and must be dealt with. Cobblestone (talk) 09:39, 11 August 2025 (EST)

I walked this back because some editors protested it on my talkpage. Feel free to approve ESL if you wish but I'd personally prefer (you don't HAVE to) if you fixed it if the ESL is not too extreme. Cobblestone (talk) 11:26, 11 August 2025 (EST)

Add 'jaks for programming languages to pages[edit source]

Hello Ferris from Rust Fenriris my fellow troonx xister, could you please add some soyjaks to programming language pages from the 'ru (I have to ask because I can't upload images as an anonymous editor, also I'm one of the anons that edits the programming language pages frequently), here are a few pages in need of jaks

Just upload whatever jaks you think are appropriate to those pages, I'm not particularly picky about it but I just do think having some incomprehensible soy woah jacks about those languages would add to the page content, thanks holmes ~Chud9361 (talk) 13:38, 12 August 2025 (EST)

Yo gang just make an account at this point instead of skinwalking editors. I always see you contribute. Cobblestone (talk) 13:46, 12 August 2025 (EST)
Agreed, you should join us, that way you can gain more "trust" over time, you dont have to particularly have an name. But if you prefer to stay anon, I dont mind helping other editors. I will do as you requested later this evening Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 14:23, 12 August 2025 (EST)
Perhaps eventually, since I edit here almost regularly.~Chud9361 (talk) 17:32, 12 August 2025 (EST)
I uploaded all of those files as requested and put them in the pages, hope you are satisfied with my choices. But I was unable to find any good ones on the 'ru for bash and C#, so I left those be. If you have any other woah jaks in mind for them, I wont mind uploading them for you by linking them here if you still want to be anon. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 23:40, 12 August 2025 (EST)

Suggestion[edit source]

Have the bot find when people post raw soyjak.st links and archive them with megalodon or archive.ph or something, would that be possible? Cobblestone (talk) 16:31, 12 August 2025 (EST)

Absolutely! Wikipedia already has an similar bot that does an similar purpose but for internet archive. I believe it is open source so I can just yoink some of its code. Not sure how lucky I will get with megalodon and archive.ph though as those have active checking against robots. Maybe I can come up with a work around, or agreement for those sites. I will check it out and keep you updated. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 17:16, 12 August 2025 (EST)
So a couple things I noticed. Megalodon does have accounts to bypass the captchas on there, but a small monthly payment is required for one of those, which I dont really feel like doing. I will try asking the webmaster of archive.ph next if he can whitelist it. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 01:19, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
Alright thanks. No problem if not feasible. Actually we do a pretty good job of archiving raw links when they are posted so this is superfluous. Cobblestone (talk) 01:43, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
Still would be nice though. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 02:18, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
Small update, the webmaster of archive.ph is being an dnb so I think it is an no even after sending an friendly reminder.
I did find out later on that they support the MementoWeb api which is basically an time machine that an whole bunch of archiving sites use, but you can only do querying with it so auto archiving them is not possible. The API doe is coal, but I will work with what I got. I could probably find an way to bypass recaptcha, but that is too much work and I want to respect the web masters wishes.
I thus have it plan on working like this using the top 50 recents every hour:
  1. When an raw soyjak.st link is posted, check MementoWeb if there is an already an archive.
  2. If so update the link with the archive.
  3. If not, update next to the link (so other readers can see) with an message that it needs to be archived.
  4. If there is an newer archive or one that does now exist when it hits that raw link again in MementoWeb it will update it.
Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 04:11, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
Dont mind me. I am just adding this here as an note for what I want the needs archive message to be, or if anyone has an better suggestion for what it should be before I add the feature:
This nigga forgot to archive the thread before posting it, you VILL do so before it turns into dust soyteen! Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 04:30, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
Ok, the new feature is up now Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 22:17, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
Sounds good but watch out because it seems to be tagging webarchive links (links from that archiver end in the raw link) Cobblestone (talk) 22:26, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
I will make the regex that checks for that ignore soyjak.st links that are part of another link Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 22:31, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
Ok, that part should be good now Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 22:45, 23 August 2025 (UTC)

Suggestion[edit source]

What if the bot fixed double redirects like in wikipedia? Only very rarely does the page need to be different than the one the second redirect is pointing to. Cobblestone (talk) 11:12, 5 September 2025 (UTC)

Ill think about it, thanks. I'll have it check like once every two weeks or something since double redirects rarely happen Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 14:59, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
Ok, I have added your feature request and should take care of any kind of double redirect. I have also added one where it marks broken redirects for deletion, for broken ones it actually will try to fix it first by trying to get the last moved target before doing so.
It will run these every Friday at Midnight UTC. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 04:59, 11 September 2025 (UTC)

It Surprises Me that PHP Functions are (mostly) the Same as JS Ones.[edit source]

I donโ€™t know why this mattered.

You know some PHP? I know only a little. Suznetsov (talk) 02:53, 8 September 2025 (UTC)

What is your issue? I can see if I can help. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 02:55, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
What does the return keyword do in both JS and PHP? I donโ€™t understand it fully. Suznetsov (talk) 02:59, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
return exists not just for php and js, but for any language really.
To put it simply, when return is executed, all it really does is immediately terminates the function, and pass back control back to the calling context (optionally with an value).
For example:

function add(a, b) {
return a + b; // This ends the function and sends the sum back to the caller
}
let result = add(2, 3); // result now contains 5

Were basically saying "Hey, Mr. Function, Iโ€™m gonna give you some inputs, and you go off and do your thing. Compute the math, do the work, whatever needs doing. Then, once youโ€™re done, come back and hand me the answer." That last part is the return.
Does that explain it? Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 03:12, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
Ah, so return tells the function to "stop" until you say it is okay for the function to start doing this and that again? Suznetsov (talk) 23:55, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
Basically yeah. Dont forget that they can give you the "answer" once they are done. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 00:54, 9 September 2025 (UTC)

The swedish fail song states their site's domain[edit source]

See Template:Swedishfail. 0:28. TotalNiggerDeath (talk) 05:54, 12 September 2025 (UTC)

Thanks, ill delete it. I think it was put there before the site admins said no splinter links which is why it got unnoticed. Thank you Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 06:08, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
Found a new version, no domain, File:Nuswinnytheme.mp3. The template uses a volume boosted version, File:SwedishFail_Song.mp3. Can you delete the old one? TotalNiggerDeath (talk) 02:06, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
Sure! Done. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 02:31, 13 September 2025 (UTC)

I cannot do it myself because after a certain number of edits, the captcha not needed message appears, and despite this it refuses to commit my changes to the wiki (not sure how to fix this), so I can only make a certain number of edits every few hours. ~Chud5338 (talk) 03:57, 22 September 2025 (UTC)

Syntax highlighting blocks and Pygments[edit source]

Any idea when we can get syntax highlighting blocks with Pygments on this wiki? We could greatly improve the style and appearance of code blocks here. For example, on Wikipedia there is

<syntaxhighlight lang="java">
public class Example {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello world!");
    }
}
</syntaxhighlight>

But this does not work here. ~Chud7080 (talk) 21:35, 22 September 2025 (UTC)

Ask Quote since only he can install extensions. He is the owner of the wiki so has access to the backend. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 22:24, 22 September 2025 (UTC)

Thanks, when I looked at it, it didnt look quite in good faith to me, but I will try to be a little more lenient for those. Thank you Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 16:31, 23 September 2025 (UTC)

I will take a look tonight, thanks Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 19:39, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
Figured out what was going on. It is giving back this error:
2|soybot | WARNING: API error cascadeprotected: This page has been protected from editing because it is transcluded in the following page, which is protected with the "cascading" option turned on: * [[:Main Page]]
so it has something to do with permissions. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 00:58, 24 September 2025 (UTC)

Thank you. Not sure what you did, but that did the trick. You are awesome Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 01:32, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
I gave the bot helper permissions so it can edit protected pages. Cobblestone (talk) 01:41, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
On another note, do you want it to check the SNCA namespace as well or leave it as is? Cause currently it only looks through the main namespace for archiving and booru count Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 19:32, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
Why not? Though if there's a SNCA namespace page that has sharty threads and a booru count it should just become a main namespace article at that point Cobblestone (talk) 22:19, 24 September 2025 (UTC)

Ideas[edit source]

Now that the bot is a helper, why don't we automate some moderation tasks? Perhaps we should have it automatically temporarily lock a page if there is edit warring, which can be defined by seeing whether a similar number of bytes is being removed and added more than X (maybe 6) times. We could also have it automatically remove ip grabber links like cob.soy and grabify and ban the offender. Thoughts? Maybe this would be infeasible to implement. Cobblestone (talk) 02:21, 24 September 2025 (UTC)

Good idea. I will spend an couple of days thinking about an list on what moderation tasks would be good to implement and put it here for review. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 02:26, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
For the edit war thing, we could have it lock pages that are being warred on, add the controversial template, then create a new talkpage topic telling the wiki admin (me) and/or jannies to come over and resolve the war (which usually involves trying to be the middleman and include both perspectives on the page without bias). Cobblestone (talk) 02:33, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
As for the ip grabber thing, or bans for edits that include a certain trigger word in general, it could revert the offending edit and apply a day-long "stopgap" ban to give time for jannies to come and examine the issue; sometimes, soyteens include cob.soy links that were used in raids and such mistakenly. It could also notify me/other jannies in the same way via talkpage. Cobblestone (talk) 02:37, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
Thats great. I like that, I will work on those two features over the weekend Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 03:16, 24 September 2025 (UTC)

Cobblestone (talk) 01:47, 26 September 2025 (UTC)

Already in it on #soy Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 01:56, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
About ze bot, can be done, but honestly I dont like to program in features unless it is actually going to be used a bunch like what I am doing now otherwise it just becomes dead redundant code. And since it is actually open source it does not make since to add one thing then remove it later. It looks a bit strange when someone looks at it too.
Mediawiki already has /api.php? anyone can use so I think I can just create an simple local script that raw dogs it to move all of them to the requested namespace Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 02:16, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Either will work. I just don't want to manually move every single day out of its parent pages. Cobblestone (talk) 02:19, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Makes since, give me a day to a couple. I will post the code for what I came up with here for transparency. The other bot feature requests will be held off for that of course so you are aware. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 02:22, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll be counting on you. Cobblestone (talk) 02:24, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
You know what, nevermind. I just realized the featured gems have the same issue too and it would be a lot of moving that could go wrong for practically no benefit. Thanks for offering to help though. Cobblestone (talk) 02:57, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
I honestly had the same thought but thought you knew what you were doing, so. Your welcome by the way Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 03:32, 26 September 2025 (UTC)

Code example on Operation PRISM[edit source]

Hi, as you have probably seen by now I am going to write an actual code example for the Operation PRISM example/schema section. I haven't had the time to flesh it out but please feel free to make whatever changes you deem fit. If everything works out we might even find it well to compile the code to WASM and propose it embedded to the sharty on /raid/. RetardedESLjeet (talk) 04:22, 16 October 2025 (UTC)

Thanks, the table layout is complete, so you can go ahead right away. Right now I am just filling in the missing data for the columns I added, which is all I need to do left now. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 04:25, 16 October 2025 (UTC)

Is there anything that needs some work?[edit source]

Hi. I'm new to this wiki and I'd appreciate if you can give me some pages/topics that need improvements. I've asked Cobblestone a few times but I don't want to bother him too much so I'm asking you. Dermatologist (talk) 01:32, 17 October 2025 (UTC)

Not Fenriris but if you are looking to cleanup and improve some articles you could check Category:Coal Articles. OopooPoopoo (talk) 01:52, 17 October 2025 (UTC)
A good way to look for articles that need improvements is to look through Category:Coal_Articles. You could also use the Special:Random feature. Just keep looking around until you find one you want to improve. Just remember no edit is too small, even fixing an typo helps. Fenriris ๐Ÿบ 01:55, 17 October 2025 (UTC)
