Groyper is a subspecies of Pepe the frog with obesity, ears and a perpetually smug attitude. He has unwillingly become a Branigger icon, due to Nick Fuentes choosing both the character and the name to represent the followers of his shitty political movement America First.[3]

Aesthetically, Groyper takes cues from the looks of Smug Pepe[4] but with both his hands intertwined to rest his chin. Additionally, various templates show Groyper with eyelashes and a human looking ear while other images lack it, what remains consistent about the character's appearance is his weight and smug expression along the sitting pose and his hands. Groyper likely originated as just a redrawn Pepe, but became considered his own subvariant, albeit it's unknown when he became associated with the name as the word itself was 4chan slang for longer than the drawing had existed.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Groyper rose to prominence around 2017, likely being kidnapped by Fuentes and turned into a mascot because of various alt-right political accounts using Groyper edits as profile pictures on Twitter while Pepe himself was still mostly associated with MAGA. He has been described with various interpretations, such as a "fatter, more racist version of Pepe" by news publications. Other types of fake lore given to Groyper include him being a toad or from the same species as Pepe, being his friend, family member, etc. Unlike Pepe or Apu, Groyper the Frog has little to no normie appeal outside of a few people that might confuse him with Pepe, this is likely because Pepe himself was already a mainstream meme before Groyper was created and he couldn't fill any niche that Pepe didn't. Another factor is Groyper's association with the political movement becoming his main usage, while Pepe is more flexible and was used as a normie before and after being appropriated by /pol/ as a heckin hate symbol. All this factors make Groyper unattractive for those that do not associate with Fuentes and his politics.
