How do you find the origins for all the obscure variants?

Reverse image search isn't really effective, how do you find these old posts? Others might need that later 1984Jak (talk) 19:17, 2 May 2025 (EST)

It's a bit complicated to explain. Normally I try searching the name of the variant or other relevant term on desuarchive /qa/. Depending on what posts I find, usually if there's an unedited template of the variant, I click on the "view same" option under the image by viewing how many times it has been posted by the same image hash and find the oldest post. Then you click "search on all boards" by seeing if it hasn't been posted on /int/ first and then might search the same image hash on another site that let's you view /pol/ or other board you suspect. Another thing is as you mentined with reverse image searching: Sometimes when I reverse image search a jak on tineye, it gives me results from the archive of /lgbt/ strangely enough, but then I copy the hash from the image there and search it on other sites with the other boards. What's good with this method is that by looking for one jak, you might stumble in a thread that contains the image of another and you are able to search for it too. That's how I found the origin of the crazed variant while looking for something else.

There's a few caveats to this that I will not be getting into detail over now, so it might require extra attention make sure you accurately found the oldest version of said jak, but in the case of the fingerboy and the crazed soyjak, it's pretty evident those are actually the first posts. But the tldr is, try to look for the image in 4cuck archival sites and search it by hash until you find the oldest post.

I like the choices you made for the daily jak. You could also try your hand at the Featured Gem if you want, ill let you update todays. I normally do those every 5 days at midnight UTC time, though it is fine if you do it a few hours earlier. Just dont forget to update Featured Gem:Main Page/Featured Gem/Static with the new tag line and colors once done. Those that you want to plan to feature can go into the featured gem archives.
