The cardinal gems are gemstones which are traditionally viewed as the most valuable. The classification has its roots in antiquity, and was centered around ceremonial significance and rarity.
Amethyst[edit | edit source]

Amethyst is a purple colored variety of quartz. Once considered extremely valuable, discovery of vast deposits in Brazil has demoted it to semiprecious status.
Diamond[edit | edit source]

Diamond is a clear crystal comprised of pure carbon. It is valuable not just for jewelry, but also in many industrial fields due to its extreme hardness.
Emerald[edit | edit source]

Emerald is a form of the mineral beryl that comes in various shades of green. According to the alchemical lore emerald counteracts poison, but most doctors advise seeking medical attention instead. Emeralds play a key role in the process of creating a gemerald.
Ruby[edit | edit source]
Ruby is a form of the mineral corundum, which is a crystalline form of aluminum oxide. It is one of the most sought after gemstones due to its vivid color, ranging from pinkish to blood red.
Sapphire[edit | edit source]
Like rubies, sapphire is a form of corundum, but different or something. Though it is best known for being blue, any corundum gemstone that isn't red is classed as a sapphire

Analthyst, cacamond, gleamond, shinerald, and glisterald[Marge...] are well known for their unique characteristics.
