A conspiracy theory is defined as a theory which states that specific groups, often national governments, occultist organizations, or certain ethno-religious groups, work together behind the scenes for one reason or another to attain a goal. In common usage, it refers to beliefs (usually with "ridiculous" premises) that contradict mainstream beliefs, with the idea that these groups are working to hide the truth about them. They are often propagated by schizos and chuds due to their non-mainstream nature, and picked up heavily in popularity around the 1970s due to the prevalence of UFO culture and the many controversies regarding the CIA and their operations, many of which were proven to be real. A good example of a "conspiracy theory" later being proven as true is MK Ultra.
Some conspiracy theories are intentionally delusional, and are orchestrated by groups like the government to discredit movements and ideas they are associated with. One of the theories most widely considered to be a psyop is the flat earth theory, though various others have been dismissed as such as well. The intention of false flags like these is to widely dismiss any associated notions of meddling from shadowy groups, and to make the general skeptic community seem deranged and unserious, whilst simultaneously drawing attention away from real-life issues and credible theories. In relation to the Sharty, a good example of this was Mousegate, which served to discredit future exposure of groups like Furcord. This effort largely failed, since Furcord was later leaked and gained traction in the Soysphere, sullying the reputation of many involved.
