Lainchan is an imageboard based on the 1998 anime television series Serial Experiments Lain. The site was founded by Kalyx in April 20, 2014, but it was formally announced on 4chan's /g/ in April 21, 2014.[1] It has its own publication called Lainzine, a type of zine. The site is currently owned by Appleman1234 and the site uses its own unique Lainchan engine, forked from Vichan.
Content[edit | edit source]
LainChan, much like the anime series Serial Experiments Lain that inspired it, organizes its discussion boards around themes deeply tied to the show’s philosophical undertones. The majority of its boards focus on topics such as the evolving relationship between humanity and technology, the psychological implications of digital existence, and speculative discussions about the internet’s role in modern society. Alongside these core themes, the site hosts numerous media-centric boards dedicated to videogames, music, and art. A key distinction between LainChan and similar imageboards like Uboachan lies in their approach to OC. While Uboachan, born from a community centered on the game Yume Nikki, actively fosters fan games, art, memes, and inside jokes, LainChan’s culture leans more toward curated discussion and shared analysis. Bans and thread deletions for little to no reason are common since having fun breaks rule 3 and rule 4.
Userbase[edit | edit source]
Lainchan has a fairly small user base for an imageboard of its age. It is mostly made up of 30+ pseudointellectual oldtroons from 4chan's /g/. The site is infamously known for having more staff than regular users. Lainchan user's also tend to inhabit other imageboards, most notably Uboachan.
Relationship with the Party[edit | edit source]
Like most well-known altchans, Lainchan has been raided many times by Soyteens. The most notable raid on Lainchan occurred on August 14, 2022, when The Party wiped all but one thread out of the /drug/ board[2] on Lainchan and stole the 11111 GET.[3][4] The one stoner online at the time had a meltdown about it.[5] The archived threads were later manually reverted, but the post count remained unchanged.
Relationship with other sites[edit | edit source]
Lainchan is closely affiliated with 4chan's /g/ due to technology and the internet both being big parts of Serial Experiments Lain, and it is officially affiliated with Uboachan for the hikikomori aspect, which is also a large part of Serial Experiments Lain. The Lainchan splinter Arisuchan, which split from Lainchan in 2017, was originally hosted on the domain lainchan.net before moving to arisuchan.jp and closing down in 2019. An archived version of arisuchan.jp is currently hosted at legacy.arisuchan.jp. Arisuchan was briefly resurrected as arisuchan.moe in 2024, went down again, and now lives at arisuchan.xyz. It is a completely dead site, however (even by altchan standards).
