Doki Doki Literature Club! (commonly abbreviated as DDLC) is a 2017 psychological horror visual novel created by Italian soyboy Dan Salvato. The game presents itself as a standard high school dating simulator, but later subverts expectations by shifting into psychological horror featuring topics of depression and suicide.

Overview

[edit | edit source]

The player assumes the role of a male high school student invited by his childhood friend, Sayori, to join the school's literature club. There, he meets the other members: Natsuki, Yuri, and the club president, Monika.

While the initial portion of the game plays like a typical romance visual novel, the story takes a dark turn at the end of the first act. As the game progresses, it incorporates spooky elements, corrupting its own user interface, breaking the fourth wall, and requiring the player to interact directly with the game's files to advance the plot.

Characters and Fates

[edit | edit source]

The protagonist's cheerful childhood friend who serves as the vice president of the Literature Club. She suffers from severe depression or something.

  • Fate: At the end of Act 1, after confessing her feelings, her depression is amplified by Monika's interference in the game code. She ends up ACK'ing herself in her bedroom. Following her death, Monika deletes her file, resetting the game as if Sayori never existed.

A timid, soft spoken club member who enjoys dark fantasy novels, tea, and collecting knives.

  • Fate: In Act 2, Monika manipulates Yuri's personality traits, turning her quiet demeanor into an unhinged, obsessive fixation on the protagonist. After confessing her love at the end of Act 2, Yuri stabs herself repeatedly with a knife regardless of the player's response. The player is then forced to sit next to her corpse for an entire weekend while the game timer glitch loops.

Natsuki

[edit | edit source]

An assertive, feisty student who loves manga and baking. She conceals a troubled home life.

  • Fate: Throughout Act 2, Natsuki experiences increasing physical glitches, including neck snapping animations and corrupt text overlays. After stumbling upon Yuri's corpse at the end of Act 2, she vomits in horror and runs out of the classroom. Monika subsequently deletes her character file offscreen.

Monika

[edit | edit source]

The self-aware president of the Literature Club who realizes she is an NPC inside a visual novel video game.

Gameplay

[edit | edit source]

Gameplay consists primarily of reading through text dialogue and making choices that affect character interactions. The game also features a poetry writing minigame where the player selects specific words to appeal to different club members.

In later sections, the traditional gameplay mechanics break down.

Sometimes it involves fucking with the game's own files for shit to happen.

Modding

[edit | edit source]

DDLC modding is one of the biggest parts of the community and one of the main things keeping it alive, allowing fans to create new stories, characters, and experiences.

An example of DDLC modding:

How to install and play DDLC mods

[edit | edit source]
  1. Download and install the original DDLC from the official website.
  2. Download the mod you want to play off the internet (there are community sites and subreddits for it).
  3. Extract the downloaded "zip", "rar", or "7z" file.
  4. Open your DDLC installation directory and locate the "game" folder.
  5. Follow the specific mod's instructions. For most standard mods, copy the extracted mod files directly into the "game" folder.
  6. Launch `DDLC.exe` and play.
  7. get raped by malware

Note: Some mods have unique installation steps, so always check the included instructions. These steps apply to the original free version of DDLC, not DDLC Plus!

Trapsuki

[edit | edit source]

Trapsuki was a DDLC meme/theory from 2017–2018 claiming that Natsuki was secretly male. It was mainly pushed by gooners, baiters, and troons who wanted to make their fantasies and projections about Natsuki seem real while also baiting and provoking her fans.

Dan Salvato's responses

[edit | edit source]

Dan Salvato made three messages addressing the controversy, essentially making it clear that the Dokis were female and rejecting the Trapsuki theory as ridiculous.

His second message on Xitter was particularly interesting, as a gooner asked him to entertain the theory, seemingly hoping to get him to confirm it and fulfill his fantasies. Dan refused to play along, making it clear that he wasn't going to validate the theory.

The aftermath

[edit | edit source]

Dan's responses effectively killed Trapsuki as a serious theory. The attempts to present it as canon lost credibility, and the whole thing became more of a joke and a source of mockery within the DDLC community.

Reception and Downloads

[edit | edit source]

Upon release, the game gained widespread attention for its psychological horror elements and really cool lore, but it got raped by pooners and trannies
