A boogeyman, also called a bogeyman if you're an ESL, is a non-existent malicious force that someone believes to exist and is scared of. Most boogeyman don't exist, at least anymore, it most of the time they are dug up to try to get your opponent banned.

Origin

The Boogeyman is a fictional monster that children are often afraid of. The term most likely comes from the Middle English word bugge, meaning "terror."

Use on the Soysphere

The term "boogeyman" is used to mock someone who thinks a non-existent entity is doing something bad. For example, when someone makes a completely SNCA post to /raid/ and it is clearly on track to being a failraid, they will often blame boogeymen such as "derailcorders," even if there is no evidence of an organized effort to derail the raid. Users who regularly make rule-breaking posts will often claim that the jannies are just out to get them, which is a boogeyman-related claim.

Lists on this very wiki sometimes have a header saying that the list shouldn't include "offsite boogeymen."

People who cry about boogeymen are often depicted as Hunkies, which is where the terms "fuggen jerdee" and "it's da coooord" come from.
