Born 7 November 1952 in the middle-of-nowhere town of Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo countryside. Full name Geraldo José Rodrigues de Alckmin Filho. Father was a pharmacist/UDN guy who later leaned hard into Franciscan and Opus Dei type Catholicism after the mother died when the kid was ten, great-uncle José Maria Alkmin was vice-president under the military dictatorship of Castelo Branco, uncle José Geraldo Rodrigues de Alckmin sat on the Supreme Court, cousins and relatives scattered through old UDN, PMDB and local power structures. They pushed the Sephardic Jew ancestry story for years even though the actual records lean more Portuguese with some German/Swiss bits mixed in. Alckmin himself got the full religious discipline package growing up and still carries the santinhos and rosary act. He married Maria Lúcia Ribeiro in 1979. And they had Three kids: Sophia, GERALDO and Thomaz (the last one dead since 2015, ITS OVER). Standard grandpa photo-ops and "pai e avô orgulhoso" bio text on every social media account. Studied medicine at Faculdade de Medicina de Taubaté, specialized in anesthesiology, later picked up acupuncture for the progressive résumé points. Did the usual student Catholic movement thing while already running for office.

Alckmin's political history started during the 70's, when he was still a medicine student (apparently every left-wing politician background starts like that). At 19 he joined the MDB, got elected most-voted councilor in Pinda, became chamber president, then at 24 the youngest mayor the town ever had. State deputy 1983-87, federal deputy 1987-95, sat in the 1988 constituent assembly, co-founded the PSDB in 1988 with the usual tucano pack (Covas, Serra, FHC etc). Spent the 90s as vice-governor under Mário Covas, running the privatization shop for highways and state companies. In 2001, Alckmin was appointed Governor of São Paulo after Mário Covas, the previous governor, died. In 2002, he was elected Governor, but left his office in 2006 to run for President. Coincidencially, a drug war started months after he resigned. He lost the elections anyways (second round against Lula, got wrecked), tried for São Paulo mayor in 2008 and failed again, then crawled back as governor for 2011-2018, the longest stretch anyone managed since the dictatorship. Ran for president again in 2018, finished fourth, refused to endorse either Bolsonaro or Haddad. In 2021 he finally quit the Social Democracy Party (ironically they're not social-democrats) after more than 30 years of loyal tucano service. In 2022, Geraldo Alckmin left to befriend Luís Inácio "Lula" da Silva, who defeated him back in the 2006 elections. Lula defeats Jair Bolsonaro in 2022, and Geraldo became his Vice-President. Also took the Development, Industry, Trade and Services ministry because one fancy title is never enough for these people. The man spent decades calling Lula everything under the sun, then switched parties to PSB, hugged the same guy, and now sits in the Jaburu palace defending every BNDES move like a true convert.

The BNDES saga

In 2024, Alckmin posted soyjaks on his xitter to explain how their Development Bank (BNDES) works to the teenage public. Series of greentext 'jak threads claiming the bank is transparent, budget-neutral, super efficient, low default rates, etc. The government opened a financial hole on that same bank AGAIN two years later. Same old story: public bank, political appointments, "modern management" press releases, and somehow the numbers never stay pretty for long.
