SNCA:Ubuntu
Ubuntu is a Debian-based GNU/Linux distribution created by the Mark Shuttleworth, along with his company Canonical. It is aimed at being friendly to new Linux users, and is the most widely used Linux operating system in the world.
Why use Ubuntu?[edit | edit source]
- Ease of use.
- Sane defaults.
- Fantastic community and wide commercial support.
- Uses Debian's simple apt package management system.
- Is compatible with Debian repositories.
- Extends the usefulness of apt with PPAs.
- Most software one needs is provided out of the box.
- It is the brainchild of a super-wealthy astronaut and certified lunatic.
Ubuntu flavours[edit | edit source]

The officially recognized variants of Ubuntu are as follows:
- Xubuntu uses the Xfce desktop environment (and is probably the most popular *buntu on /g/)
- Kubuntu uses the KDE desktop environment
- Lubuntu uses the LXQT desktop environment
- Ubuntu Budgie uses the Budgie desktop environment
- Ubuntu MATE uses the MATE desktop environment
- Ubuntu Cinnamon uses the Cinnamon desktop environment
- Ubuntu Unity uses the Unity desktop environment
- Ubuntu Studio is designed for multimedia editing and creation
- Ubuntu Kylin is localised for China and comes with the UKUI desktop environment
- Edubuntu is customized for educational use
There are many other derivatives of Ubuntu, but only those listed above are supported by Canonical.
Controversy[edit | edit source]
Ubuntu has been criticised numerous times for implementing datamining software like Telemetry and (((Amazon))) ads.
Ubuntu is generally considered to be a "bloated" OS compared to other distros, especially Arch based ones.
Linux Mint[edit | edit source]

Linux mint is a popular ubuntu based OS that is basically a windows ripoff based on ubuntu. It's as windows user friendly as it gets and it usually the second most popular linux distro that the windows immigrants choose after the ubuntu.
It comes mainly with the Cinnamon environment but the MATE and xfce versions are also supported. It's a bit more lightweight than the ubuntu and doesn't have telemetry and many other gloweralds.
The creator also sucks Palestinian cock, if that matters to you[1].
Why use Linux Mint?[edit | edit source]
- It is based on Ubuntu and Debian, meaning nearly all community support found there will also apply to it, on top of its own support.
- It comes with all of Ubuntu and Debian's software selection on top of its own
- It comes with the highly-praised DE, Cinnamon
- It is meant to be very easy to use for beginners, while still letting advanced users doing extra configuring
Drawbacks to using Linux Mint[edit | edit source]
- Up until version 17, Linux Mint had a retarded policy that forced users to reinstall everything whenever they wanted to do a system upgrade. That is no longer the case as of Linux Mint 17 (Rebecca), but still applies to users of older versions.
- Packages tend to be slightly out-of-date and you will have to end up using PPAs or Flatpaks if you want cutting-edge software.
- Some users that are used to extremely light-weight distros may dislike the addition (or bloating) of graphical interfaces for most tasks (software managing, backup tools etc.)
- It includes some proprietary software such as codecs so as to provide their out-of-the-box experience, which freedom-minded users may dislike.
- If you dislike the green color, you're going to hate this distro until you change the theme (which can be done in the initial setup).
