Sockpuppeting is the act of using alternative/multiple accounts in order to pretend you are someone else. It is a common shitflinging tactic made for the purpose of falseflagging as a namefag you don't like. Whilst having an alternative account is not sockpuppeting in itself, pretending you are a new identity is sockpuppeting. These are usually used to ban evade or falseflag.
How to notice sockpuppets[edit | edit source]
For the booru look for the account creation date, for the party look for typing patters, typically some people will have specific patterns in writing which are a habit for them like how ESL they are, which version of english they speak, the slang they use, etc. Look for smaller details such as posts they usually interact with vs don't and when they usually react. Of course you can just label any detractor as a sockpuppet.
Sockpuppets also can be identified by their interests, their positions towards different things and general behaviour.
On the wiki[edit | edit source]
Whilst less common on the wiki due to the verification and steps it takes to be verified it still can happen. There's not much point to it as reversals take one click, you can see someone's edit history and you can see previous pages.
An example of this is Gem Control, banned prominent user on the wiki that was caught abusing using sock puppet accounts same on SoyBooru.
On the Sharty[edit | edit source]
Sockpuppeting doesn't exist on the Sharty because it is an anonymous imageboard without accounts, but the closest thing available is samefagging, where one person replies as though they were different people. Enabling IDs on a thread can help curb samefags, but they can still use a VPN to bypass this.
On the booru[edit | edit source]
Booru sockpuppet accounts are used regularly typically by the scammers or people intentionally posting coal and wanting to hide their identity, example being Circus_2, who has had multiple accounts after getting banned.
