DOS (Disk Operating System) is a family of oldpoopa single-tasking real-mode operating systems (basically just extensions on the BIOS) based off QDOS, originally made for IBM PCs, and was one of the first operating systems for the x86 processor. Early versions of Windows were basically graphical shells ontop of MS-DOS, the last one being Windows Me before they ditched it for Windows XP.
Variants
[edit | edit source]- QDOS - The first variant, made in a cave for computer kits in 1980, got bought out by Microslop and turned into MS-DOS.
- IBM PC DOS - Basically just unbranded MS-DOS, with mentions of MS-DOS and GW-BASIC memoryholed, aldoebeit the first DOS variant or something.
- MS DOS - The most popular one, Microsoft's variant, was installed on every PC because of Microshit's OEM deals, and was what early windows was built on.
- DR DOS - The gemmiest variant, with FAT32, networking and multitasking. Unfairly killed by Micoalsoft intentionally breaking Windows 3.1 if the user was using DR DOS.
- FreeDOS - Open source variant, FAT32 and long file name support, use this if you want to run DOS now.
