The AK-47, or Avtomat Kalashnikova (Kalashnikov's automatic) in Russian, is an assault rifle chambered in the 7.62x39mm cartridge. It was created by Soviet engineer Mikhail Kalashnikov in 1947 and is the originating firearm of the Kalashnikov family of rifles. The weapon is famous for its reliability, ease of use, and low production cost. These factors have made it the most-produced and wild available firearm in the world, with 100 million Kalashnikov-style rifles, 75 million of which are AK-47's, estimated to have been produced.^[1]This has also lead to the weapon being heavily used by paramilitary forces and insurgencies.

The weapon is often compared with the AR-15, as both were the primary rifles of choice for their respective countries. The AR-15 is generally considered to be more accurate, lighter, and has the capability to launch grenades. The AK-47, on the other hand, is cheaper, more reliable, and is chambered in a larger caliber. Beyond that, the AR-15 is associated with formalized regular armed forces, while the AK is known for being used by irregular forces and criminal networks. This is because the AR-15 was made for use primarily by wealthy and well-equipped western militaries, while the AK was designed to be mass-produced and reliable enough to be used by poorly-equipped insurgent forces operating in poor conditions.

The AR-15 is also primarily associated with chuds, as it is an American weapon used primarily by capitalist countries. In contrast, the AK is more associated with leftists, since it is a Soviet weapon used primarily by Communist countries. Despite this, several chuds like Brendon Herrera and Sam Hyde have used the gun, while some trannies have used the AR.

The gun was inspired by the German Sturmgewehr 44 rifle, a rifle used by the German military in World War 2. The Soviets developed the 7.62x39mm cartridge for the SKS carbine and the RPD light machine gun, this would eventually be the caliber used in the AK-47. Kalashnikov thought of the idea to create an automatic rifle while recovering from a wound in a hospital. He made his first attempt in 1944 but his design lost out to another design in a competition. He would revise his design and eventually submit it to another design competition in 1946, this time the design would win out and the first prototypes were made in 1947. The design was tested throughout 1948 and officially adopted by the Soviet Union in 1949. Kalashnikov later developed a more modernized design of the gun called the AKM which became the most widely produced variant of the rifle.

The rifle saw it's first major service in the Vietnam War, where the rifles reliability and low production costs proved it to be a major asset for the Vietcong. The rifle was generally superior to the American M16 rifle, doe this was primarily because the M16 was being sabotaged by SLFs in the US military who didn't like that the rifle wasn't made by the US armies main weapons supplier or something.^[2] The rifle would see continued use throughout the cold war in The Troubles, The Iran-Iraq war, and the Soviet-Afghan war. After the collapse of the USSR, the rifle began to be heavily trafficked out of the country and sold illegally to various insurgencies and organized crime networks, cementing it as the most widely used firearm in the world.

Despite initially being a Russian weapon, most AKs were made in China, Romania, and Egypt.

Use by the 'arty and others[edit | edit source]

The AK saw it's first use by Kuzist forces in the Second Soyvil War. The low cost and high reliability of the gun was perfect for the hit-and-run tactic employed by the Kuzists. Interestingly enough, many Sootist forces took a liking to weapon as well, making heavy used of captured AK's. Following Kuz's victory in the conflict, the AK became the official assault rifle of the sharty under the Kolyma Network.
The general proliferation of the gun lead to its heavy use in the Third Soyvil War, used by both pro and anti zellig forces.
The infamous Fourth Soyvil War saw the heaviest use of the gun, becoming the most used firearm of the war, with only the AR-15 coming close. The collapse of Kolyma led to the spread of the gun into civilian and criminal hands, becoming used by various anti-frootist insurgency forces.
The gun has been used by soysurgent forces in every soysurgency, including the 5th Soyvil War
