Alaska is an exclave state of the United States located west of Canada. It is the northernmost and westernmost state, and also the easternmost if you're being pedantic. It is the largest by geographic area (larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined) but also the most sparsely populated.

History[edit | edit source]

Alaska was used as a land bridge for le heckin indigenous peoples or something. Some people decided they liked the freezing tundra where nothing grows that's full of bloodthirsty polar bears and decided to settle there, becoming the Inuit.

Russia began colonizing Alaska around the 17th century. During the Age of Discovery, Spain sent some expeditions to Alaska but they were mostly a DNB.

In 1867, the US Secretary of State, William Seward, purchased Alaska for an insanely cheap price because Russia didn't want it. Seward became a gegbull for this because Alaska was seen as useless, but it turned out that it was full of gold and oil, so Russia got utterly raped as usual. It was initially under a military government before becoming a federal district in 1884. It was incorporated as an organized territory in 1912.

During World War II, Japan attacked the Aleutian Islands. This became the only World War II campaign on the North American mainland.

Alaska was admitted as the forty-ninth state on January 3, 1959.[1]

Geography[edit | edit source]

Alaska is mostly an uninhabited tundra, but there are some cities. It has access to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans as well as the Bering Strait. The tallest mountain is Mount McKinley (called "Denali" in newspeak).

Boroughs[edit | edit source]

Unlike every other state except Louisiana, Alaska does not have counties. Instead, it has boroughs, which are functionally the same as counties but are called something different because Congress told Alaska they weren't allowed to have counties back when they were a territory. However, about half of the state is not in any borough due to the sparse population. This area is called the "Unorganized Borough." It is divided into census areas, which are sometimes treated as county equivalents but have no county-level governments unlike boroughs.
