Monaco, officially the Principality of Monaco, is a microscopic city-state on the French Riviera primarily consisting of apartment buildings, money, yachts, casinos, Formula 1 cars, and people explaining that they moved there because they "really like the Mediterranean climate."[1]
At approximately 2 km², Monaco is the second-smallest sovereign state on Earth after the Vatican. Despite this, it has somehow managed to fit an entire country, a royal family, a Formula 1 circuit[even though it's so small it breaks the track length regulations], dozens of skyscrapers, a harbor full of superyachts and approximately half of Europe's private wealth into an area smaller than some airports.
Monaco is best known for:
- Having no personal income tax for most residents
- MONEY
- GAMBLING
- Cars going NYOOOOOOOOOOM through residential streets
- Rich people
- Superyachts
- Being what happens when you turn a tax policy into a country
- Having more millionaires per square meter than (You) have dollars
- France being visible approximately three meters away in every direction
- Somehow not being annexed by France
- Princess Grace Kelly
- Making Switzerland look affordable
- Having the same exact flag as Indonesia. (even doe Monaco made their flag first)
Geography

Monaco is located on the Mediterranean coast and is surrounded by France, except for the part where the Mediterranean Sea prevents France from surrounding it even harder.
The entire country covers only about 2.1 square kilometres.
This has resulted in Monaco adopting the revolutionary urban-planning philosophy of:
>we're out of land
>build upwards

Consequently, Monaco is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Buildings are squeezed between the mountains and coastline, with skyscrapers, tunnels, bridges and underground infrastructure occupying virtually every available cubic meter.
Monaco has even expanded into the Mediterranean through land reclamation because apparently running out of country is merely a minor inconvenience when you have enough money.🗝️
Economy

Monaco's economy revolves around finance, tourism, luxury real estate, hospitality, gambling and providing wealthy foreigners with an extremely compelling reason to discover that they have always wanted to live next to France.
The principality is particularly famous for its tax system. Monaco generally does not levy personal income tax on residents, with an important exception applying to many French citizens due to agreements with France.
This has made Monaco attractive to wealthy entrepreneurs, investors, athletes, celebrities and other people suffering from the debilitating medical condition known as:

The basic Monegasque economic model is therefore:
- Be tiny
- Be beautiful
- Have low taxes
- Attract rich people
- Sell them apartments for prices that violate several laws of mathematics
- Build another apartment
- Repeat
Real estate
Real estate in Monaco is famously expensive because the supply curve encounters the minor geographical problem of THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA.

A completely ordinary apartment may therefore require You to sell your house, car, kidneys, retirement account, firstborn child and several Balkan countries.

You will live in Nice (that's an actual city btw for all you Amerimutts reading this).
Taxation

Monaco's lack of general personal income taxation is perhaps its most internationally famous economic characteristic.
This naturally causes governments elsewhere in Europe to periodically become very interested in why their wealthiest citizens suddenly developed an intense appreciation for Monegasque culture.
>Why did you move to Monaco?
>What part of the culture?
Despite its reputation, Monaco is not literally a country without taxes. The government receives revenue from VAT, corporate taxation in applicable circumstances, real-estate transactions, state monopolies, tourism and other sources.
Lolbertarians nevertheless look at Monaco and immediately begin experiencing physiological symptoms.
Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo is Monaco's most famous district and contains the legendary Casino de Monte-Carlo.
The casino opened during the 19th century and became closely associated with Monaco's transformation into an international luxury destination.
Ironically, Monegasque citizens are prohibited from gambling in the casino itself.
This produces perhaps the most economically efficient gambling policy imaginable:
>Locals keep their money.
>Foreigners lose theirs.🗝️

The casino, luxury hotels and surrounding architecture helped create Monaco's reputation as the natural habitat of tuxedos, Aston Martins and fictional British intelligence agents.
Formula One

Once per year Monaco remembers that its streets are technically roads and hosts the Monaco Grand Prix.
The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most famous events in Formula One, with cars racing directly through Monte Carlo on an exceptionally narrow street circuit.

The circuit includes:
- Public roads
- Extremely tight corners
- A tunnel
- Elevation changes
- Barriers approximately 0.00004 nanometers away from the cars
- Yachts full of rich people watching other rich people drive expensive objects
- Approximately seven overtaking opportunities since 1929
The race's continued existence can primarily be explained by the fact that it looks unbelievably cool.

History

Monaco's modern political history is closely associated with the House of Grimaldi.
According to tradition, in 1297 Francesco Grimaldi and his men captured the fortress on the Rock of Monaco after entering disguised as Franciscan monks.
The Grimaldi family subsequently established control over Monaco and, despite interruptions, has ruled the principality for centuries.
In 1861, France formally recognized Monaco's sovereignty under the Franco-Monegasque Treaty.
During the nineteenth century, Monaco developed Monte Carlo and its casino industry, helping transform the previously rather poor principality into an international resort.
Then rich people arrived.
Then richer people arrived.
Then Formula 1 arrived.
Then someone built a yacht larger than Liechtenstein.
And here we are.
Government

Monaco is a constitutional hereditary monarchy headed by the Prince of Monaco.
The current sovereign is Albert II of the House of Grimaldi.
Unlike the monarchs of many contemporary European constitutional monarchies, Monaco's prince retains meaningful political powers.
The country also possesses a National Council and a Minister of State.
This makes Monaco one of the few places where You can simultaneously experience:

Demographics
Monaco has roughly 38,000 residents, meaning there are universities with larger populations than the entire country.
Actual Monegasque citizens form a minority of the resident population. Large French and Italian communities live in the principality alongside residents from many other countries.
A significant proportion of Monaco's residents are foreign nationals.
This is largely because becoming a resident is somewhat easier than convincing Monaco to make you an actual citizen.
The average resident

The average Monaco resident wakes up at 10:30 AM, checks whether his portfolio has appreciated by another €800,000 overnight, walks onto his balcony overlooking six superyachts, drives his Ferrari 450 meters to lunch, complains about how expensive everything has become, and then crosses into France by accidentally walking too far down the street.[This is an official demographic statistic.]
Military
Monaco possesses small military and security units, including the Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince.

With a population of roughly 38,000 and an area of approximately 2 km², Monaco is not generally considered a leading conventional military superpower.
Its principal strategic defense doctrine consists of:
>France is literally right there.
Attempting to invade Monaco would also immediately crash several European property portfolios, making the economic consequences too terrifying to contemplate.
Monaco vs. Liechtenstein

Monaco and Liechtenstein occupy remarkably similar ecological niches.
Both are:
- Tiny
- Extremely wealthy
- European
- Monarchies
- Full of foreigners
- Associated with favorable taxation
- Smaller than places that have no business being larger than countries
- Somehow sovereign
However, the two represent opposite builds of the European microstate skill tree.
Liechtenstein:
>mountains
>banks
>factories
>Swiss francs
>German
>quiet
>go to bed at 9 PM
Monaco:
>Mediterranean>casinos
>yachts
>Ferraris
>French
>Formula 1
Trvthnvke
Monaco is what happens when somebody creates a country in Cities: Skylines with unlimited money but forgets to purchase additional map tiles.
It is simultaneously an ancient monarchy, international financial center, Mediterranean resort, Formula 1 circuit, gigantic luxury apartment complex and parking lot for boats worth more than the GDP of small nations.
It has survived for centuries despite being surrounded almost completely by a country approximately 260,000 times larger.
France could conquer Monaco before lunch.
It doesn't.
Why?
