4chan (also known as 4cuck, the 'cuck, and the Forchy[No one says this]) is an American public toilet created in 2003. Unless you want to count soyjak.party, 4chan is the only English-language anonymous imageboard that anyone cares about. The website is best known for spawning epic memes no one likes[Meds now] such as Wojak, Pepe the frog, and Soyjaks.

4chan is looked down upon by most soyteens since nearly every board is millennials sharing their pedophilic goon material. 4chan is usually depicted by left-wingers as a hecking edgy far-right skate park where everyone talks about the school shooting they'll commit tomorrow and the next trans person they're gonna murder. In reality, 85% of the website is porn, and /pol/ is mostly unserious Facebook-tier bullshit.

Despite the hostile environment, 4chan was the cradle of Soy Civilization. 4chan's /int/ board was the site of the first Soyjak in December 2017. 4chan's /qa/ board would be the home of Soy culture until it was locked in November 2021. After /qa/'s locking, other 4chan boards like /s4s/ and /bant/ were considered as potential targets for soyteen recolonization, but no successful recolonization effort was ever made due to Soyjak.party's rise in popularity. Boards like /r9k/, /int/ and /pol/ were also considered. However, the boards where you can see the most soyteen activity are /wsg/ or /pol/.

In April 2025, a lone soyteen known as Captain Gem hacked into 4chan, downloaded 4chan's source code, briefly unlocked /qa/, and leaked personal info of every single staff member, in an event known as the Great Cuckset. The hacking brought large attention to soyjak.party and boosted its activity to its highest ever.

Website activity and total posts-per-day have been in decline since the 2010's, and are now below 600,000 a day. In 2025, 4 boards have been used significantly more than the other boards: /vg/ (Video Game Generals), /pol/, /v/ (Video Games), and /vt/ (Virtual YouTubers).

The site was originally created for Moot's group of weeb friends he had from ADTRW, the anime subforum of Something Awful. The website was created by translating the source code of the Futaba Channel into English. The first board was /b/ - Anime/Random, cementing 4chan's role as a designated shitting street.

The stages of 'cuck

If you’ve been on 4chan for more than five minutes, you’ve probably heard some oldfag rant about how the site “went to shit” at some point. Here is a full rundown on when and why it all started falling apart.

The first major fuck-up that set the dominoes in motion was when moot deleted /new/ back in 2011[a]. /new/ was like the proto-/pol/—ack place where people discussed politics, news, and other related topics. For some fucking reason, moot decided that deleting /new/ was a good thing. Big mistake. All those users suddenly found themselves without a home. Instead of just disappearing, they spread out across the site, bringing their brand of retardation to other boards that weren’t equipped to handle it.

Realizing he’d unleashed a horde of politically obsessed retards on the rest of 4chan, moot tried to fix his mistake by creating /pol/. The idea was simple: give these idiots their own board so the rest of the site could function normally. But this spectacularly failed. Over time, the culture of /pol/ started leaking out into other boards. This slow creep infected nearly every corner of 4chan, turning it into a site dominated by /pol/ mentality.

By 2014, it was pretty clear to moot that he’d irrecoverably fucked up. Modern politics were getting more idiotic, and /pol/ was at the center of it. So, what did moot do? He jumps ship in 2014, right when things start getting really retarded with the rise of modern MAGA and woke politics, the alt-right, and all that. And who steps in? Hiroyuki Nishimura, or “Hiro,” buys 4chan and then basically does fuck-all with it. It’s like he bought a sinking ship and just decided to let it sink slower.

When Hiro took over, there was a brief moment of hope that maybe things would get better. Spoiler: they didn’t. Hiro essentially abandoned the site and handed it over to a cabal of discord Jannies. He barely interacts with the community, and when he does, it’s usually to introduce some half-baked bullshit. (aldoe, 4chan seems to be one of the only sites of its size left actually putting effort into its April fools pranks, not that it matters as we do them too)

So who’s actually running the show now? As I've mentioned: a cabal of Discord jannies led by a guy known as RapeApe. These jannies are the worst kind of power-tripping losers—guys who get off on wielding their tiny bit of authority to ban people, delete posts, and generally fuck up the site. They’re a mix of /pol/tards, Discord pedos, and other assorted rejects who have no business being in charge of anything, let alone a website like 4chan. They don’t even get paid; they’re doing it for free, which tells you everything you need to know about their motivation.

These jannies have been systematically sabotaging 4chan from the inside. They over-moderate certain boards while letting others run wild, pushing their own agendas and banning anyone who doesn’t toe the line. They’ve turned 4chan into a sanitized, paranoid, and frankly boring shadow of its former self. And the worst part? There’s no accountability. Hiro doesn’t give a shit, so these jannies do whatever they want with zero oversight.[1]

The main positions among 4chan's moderation staff are moderators ("mods") and janitors ("jannies"). Moderators can delete threads as well as ban users. Janitors can only delete threads and send ban requests to the moderators. Neither mods nor jannies receive any type of compensation for the countless hours of "hard" work they put into the site with the exception of a few high level staff members which Hiro gives a few soicoins to every month out of pity. Mods spend most of their time in the irc and discord erping with each other and only show up to actually moderate once they get sick of banning people who complain about the state of their dying website from the irc for interrupting their jerk session.

The moderation of 4chan has become subject to controversy. Innocent funposters, including appreciators of soyjaks, have become increasingly persecuted by the members of the moderation staff. Many of these persecuted users have taken refuge in communities such as soyjak.party. (like le hecken jewerinos!)

Captcha[edit | edit source]

4cuck like many sites has a captcha. Unlike many other sites however 4chans captcha rigs it for its users. The captcha has a section in its source code where it has a "difficulty". This difficulty goes from easy to "Lunatic" which is the hardest,[b] With lunatic being basically impossible and is meant to prevent you from posting. This is to weed out "bad actors". The captcha also has code for "useFakeCharPadding" and "useInvert". 4chan is the one of the only Imageboards out there to have a rigged captcha. If you have ever felt that sometimes captchas are bullshit on the cuck, this is why.

New captcha[edit | edit source]

Nevermind all that info above, on December 16 2025 they introduced a new captcha that features a 3 step process, where you compare some shapes and text. For some reason the developers tried to make this new captcha look as out of place as possible. This BTFOd all bots on the site, but some 4chan users complained about how awful it is evendoe the captcha is arguably easier to use. BTW heres a simple guide.

  • For the one with multiple circles, one the one with the most circles.
  • For the one with letters/symbols/numbers. choose the one with the symbols, and if there are no symbols, choose numbers.
  • For the one with shapes, choose the one that doesnt get repeated twice.
  • AND DON’T FORGET TO CLICK NEXT

Also, just as this new captcha rolled out, the team made 4chan Passes purchasable by card again.

"Anonymity"[edit | edit source]

4chan used to be a site where you could post Anonymously. However over time this has slowly become less and less true. 4cuck has standard anti-user practices like banning vpns which is fair considering every other image-board does it and there are legitimate uses for doing so but there are other stuff that is total bullshit. Today in order to post on 4chan you have to wait a couple of minutes in order to make a new thread or post. The only way to skip this is to Verify your email. Yes, an imageboard where you have to verify your email. 4chan also has code for Google authenticator for janny accounts. 4chans moderation software also has options for Automatically forwarding your post to the FBI and law enforcement.

On August 13, 2013, Moot decided to make /a/ naruto themed and sticked a ton of naruto threads and added a message saying "N/a/RUTO CONFIRMED BEST ANIME CHINESE CARTOON OF ALL TIME". /a/'s natural response was to sperg out and spam CP and gore until the mods reverted everything (proving that der cucks have 'P on their computer, ready to post whenever they wish)

Even today, many boards allow pedophilia and lolicon.

Ban Evading[edit | edit source]

There are multiple methods to ban-evade on 4chan such as:

  • Restarting your router (requires dynamic IP; if you aren't sure if you have one, you do. Static IPs cost the ISP more money and you usually have to pay for one.)
  • Using mobile data (make sure to clear your cookies and then turn airplane mode on for a few seconds).
  • Using proxies by following the steps below (coal)
  1. Get proxies that aren't banned. This may cost money; regardless, some people say that your best chances are in obscure VPNs or exit nodes in obscure countries.
  2. Go to firefox settings and configure the proxy IP address and port. There should be information about this on your provider's website. If you have Linux, OpenVPN will take care of this for you and there is no need to specifically configure proxy settings per application. You can also use a browser extension called proxy switchyomega to save data usage.

How 4chan grew fast[edit | edit source]

On SomethingAwful, you could not make an account, make a reply, make a thread, view majority of subforums, view full-sized images instead of the thumbnails, visit user post histories and archives or use the search function there without paying a special ten dollars. The ONLY things you could do on SA for free was lurk a few DNB subforums and read some popular threads that were on the front page. 4chan was created by moot, a user of said forum in 2003. He originally intended to use "4chan.net" as a joke email domain, but he eventually decided to turn it into an imageboard after being inspired by 2chan. He advertised his 2chan splinter on SomethingAwful and it instantly blew up because of how free and easy it was to post and view compared to SomethingAwful. Even for users that paid, there were annoying post cooldowns, the strict image file size limits etc. Thousands of anime fans on SA just migrated there in the first 48 hours and never left. After a few months and weeks many of the SA settlers told their friends, classmates, siblings etc. about this site called "4chan" which helped grow it.

By 2004, almost every anime forum on the internet hotlinked 4chan images on their website[c] which led to even more users entering the website and instantly getting attracted. Many early YouTube videos and other popular meme websites had memes that were stolen from 4chan and when people reverse serched these memes they were lead to that website. From 2005-2008, moot held IRL 4chan panels at Otakon[2] which helped a lot, until 4chan got banned from Otakon in 2008 for being too chaotic. Moot wrote on /con/ that it's extremely likely that Otakon will not let them host a new panel.[3] In 2013 moot hosted another panel at AWA con, and livestreamed it online. All text on 4chan turned bold 30 minutes before the event.

On April 14, 2025, a soyGOD managed to hack into 4chan's server, unlocking /qa/ and leaking the janny board /j/ and the source code of 4chan's proprietary Futallaby fork Yotsuba in the process. 4chan's developer desuwa shut down the server after the hack was made public, but the damage was done. One post before the 11-day-long downtime was chicken jockey.[4] When the site came back 11 days later, the jannies deleted kway in dilation.
